My life has truly been transformed by free software, open source software and free services on the web. Back while I was a student I used these products and services, but did not really donate to keep them running. From the past few years, I have been donating annually to these and I plan to continue to do that. Much like any donation, the amount can be small or big, but it shows real support for the creators and maintainers and lets them know that someone appreciates what they are doing.
