NWS Now

Shunning the commercial weather websites, I prefer getting my weather information from the National Weather Service (NWS) website. Though this website looks like it’s from another era and takes a bit of digging to figure out, I like that it shows all the data and predictions without any ads. I looked to get this information on my phone too, but there did not seem to be any weather Android app from NWS.

That is until I discovered NWS Now created by Joe Perkins. This is an ad-free tracking-free Android app that uses the free NWS API to get its information. It is not available in the Google Play Store. Instead the APK installer file needs to be downloaded from the website and installed manually on the phone.

The UI is really bare-bones, but it can show all the weather information I used to get from the NWS website on the app. This includes current weather (for current GPS location or any city), hourly forecast (data and graphs), 10-day forecast and the beautiful 24/48-hour weather maps.

NWS Now doesn’t have the UI chops of Hello Weather my other favorite Android weather app, but it is simple and straightforward.
