GIMP image window is blank

Many times when I open an image in GIMP, using Open With in the file explorer, GIMP shows an empty image window. Sometimes, this window is not just blank, but transparent and also flickers. This affects only the image window. The toolbox and filters window are rendered correctly.

Going by Google, this seems to be a problem that affects only me. No one else seems to be facing this problem. Removing the ~/.gimp-2.8 directory did not help.

The hack that I discovered is that if I select multiple images and then do a Open With on them then GIMP opens all of them correctly. No blank image window!

Tried with: GIMP 2.8 and Ubuntu 14.04

GIMP toolbox is missing

I had set GIMP to single window mode a while ago. I opened an image file in GIMP recently and found that the toolbox, which usually appears on the left, was not displayed.

No one seems to know what causes this error. But, one of the solutions worked for me. Go to Edit > Preferences > Window Management and choose Reset saved window positions to default values. Close and open back GIMP and the toolbox should be back!

Tried with: GIMP 2.8.10 and Ubuntu 14.04

How to install latest GIMP on Ubuntu

The GIMP that ships with Ubuntu can get quite old over the lifetime of the OS. Thankfully, Otto Kesselgulasch maintains a PPA from which the latest version of GIMP can be installed easily:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install gimp

Tried with: GIMP 2.8 and Ubuntu 12.04

How to open WebP file in GIMP

WebP is an image format developed by Google. Most image viewers and editors do not support it right now. To be able to open WebP image files in GIMP, install the gimp-webp and libwebp packages from the george-edison55/webp PPA:

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:george-edison55/webp
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install gimp-webp libwebp

Tried with: GIMP 2.6.12, LibWebP and Ubuntu 12.04
