Seeing that there was a local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), we decided to enrol our son in that. This post is a work-in-progress to capture notes from his year in the BSA.
BSA is a hierarchical organization with many levels, starting with the National Council at the top and ending with the Den at the bottom.
For us, the local hierarchy turned out to be: Golden Gate Area Council -> Mission Peak District -> Pack 199 -> Dens.
The pack seems to have positions like Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Committee Chair, Treasurer, Quartermaster and other chairs.
Kids in a pack are placed in different types of dens based on their age/grade:
It looked like the dens had a maximum of 10 kids in each. Each den seemed to have a Den Leader and Assistant Den Leader.
All the positions seemed to be managed by parents as volunteers.
Our son falls into the wolf den.
The Cubmaster shared a list of items to buy for new joinees. These could be bought from a nearby scout shop or online. The nearest for us was the South Bay Scout Shop. Note that they close at 3PM most days and are closed on Sundays.
